NOTES FROM STEEN EILER RASMUSSEN - LIGHTS IN ARCHITECTURE

At the beginning of this summer I began reading a book called 'Om at opleve arkitektur' by a very famous danish architecture theorist, Steen Eiler Rasmussen. And after having read it, I can only say that it is a must read, if interested in architecture.

I will in the following quote a part of the book that especially caught my interest. It is a beautiful chapter named 'Daglyset og Architecturen' - 'Daylight and Architecture', where he discribes the use of light in various ways, and I have chosen the part where he withdraw the two dutch painters Jan Vermeer van Delft and Pieter de Hooch. Steen Eiler Rasmussen is thereby implimenting my two favorit things Architecture and Art in a symbiosis, as he explains how their paintings is a documentation for the importans of light in architecture.

(Jan Vermer van Delft: Title: Interiør med dame og en herre stående ved et instrument)

The key element in Jan Vermers painting is his ability to document the light in a room and the light in his paintings is almost always comming from the left to show the most dramatic light situration.

(Pieter de Hooch: Title: Moderlig omsorg)

In the pictures of Pieter de Hooch is it primarly the more complex compositions that differs from the paintings of Vermeer. Hooch often looks from one room to another and from one lighting situation to another, still keeping each shape of the room very sharp and simpel and the same goes for the different lighting in each room. Everything is left in a clear attitude, removing any zones.
